Scholarships

FAI offers first-timer artist & industry scholarships to attend the conference. In 2018, Folk Alliance awarded 146 first-timer scholarships. In addition, this year the Folk DJ community is offering the Gene Shay Folk DJ scholarship.

Once you apply for an artist or industry scholarship, please do not register until you have been contacted about whether or not you have received a scholarship (on September 23, 2019). If you don’t receive a scholarship, you will still be able to register at the earlier registration rate.

Artist Scholarships

  • Must be a current member of Folk Alliance International (anyone can become a member)
  • Must be a first-time attendee
  • Only Official Showcase applicants may apply for an artist scholarship
  • Scholarship amounts can range from 50-100% conference registration discount (does not include travel or hotel)
  • Members of a group must apply individually
  • Scholarships are awarded on a first-come basis
  • Scholarships awarded are based on the availability of funds (FAI welcomes donations to the Scholarships Fund)
  • Artist scholarship applications close on September 16, 2019
  • Artists will be notified on September 23 of their application status

Industry Scholarships

  • Must be a current member of Folk Alliance International (anyone can become a member)
  • Must be a first-time attendee
  • Scholarship amounts are typically for a 100% conference registration discount (does not include travel or hotel)
  • Scholarships are awarded on a first-come basis
  • Scholarships awarded are based on the availability of funds (FAI welcomes donations to the Scholarships Fund)
  • Applications are reviewed monthly with notices going out the first week of each month
  • Industry scholarships will close on January 3, 2020

Folk DJ Scholarship

  • Must program Folk and Global Roots formats (must be 50% of playlist or more).
  • Must be an internet, satellite, or terrestrial broadcaster.
  • Minimum one year on-air.
  • No more than eight years of broadcasting experience.
  • Scholarship provides one full conference registration, travel expenses, and hotel
  • Folk DJ Scholarship applications close on September 30, 2019, at midnight CT
