A Warm Welcome to Montreal

FAI is ecstatic to receive such a warm welcome from community leaders in Montréal. The Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, Grand Chief of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, and the Mayor of Montréal have all expressed enthusiasm and support for the upcoming Conference.

We look forward to taking in the wonderful sights, food, and culture of the city and wish to express our gratitude to all who have accepted and welcomed us with open arms.

Folk music is a cherished part of this country’s cultural heritage, and we know that Canada is home to some of the most talented artists and creative industry professionals in the world. Through Creative Canada—the first-ever federal strategy to grow our creative industries—our government will continue to support our artists and musicians in doing what they do best: telling our stories and bringing our culture to life.

Canadian Minister of Heritage and Multiculturalism Pablo Rodriguez shows support to Folk Alliance International

Music is universal to every culture, and is meant to be shared and enjoyed. Folk music is a grassroots style that, in many instances, expresses in the most direct manner the essence of the hopes, dreams and challenges of the society of its creators. With that in mind, I’d like to congratulate Folk Alliance International for hosting the first-ever International Indigenous Music Summit as part of this year’s festivities. We appreciate the efforts to showcase Indigenous artists from around the world and share their gifts and hope that this will become a permanent feature.

Montrealers take great pride in celebrating their identity, one that is deeply rooted in Indigenous culture, as illustrated by the white pine, an emblem that is central to our flag. This is why I am particularly thrilled to see this 2019 edition focus on Indigenous voices. [ … ] I also wish to thank the organizers of the Folk Alliance International Conference for choosing our city to host this unparalleled event in the field of music.
